Creative Expression for Human Rights
Verviers (Belgium), Banja Luka (Bosnia), Torino di Sangro (Italy) – 2014–2016
When faced with exclusion, inequality and social injustice, young people often lack spaces where they can reflect, express, and reclaim their rights. This long-term educational process unfolded over three years through a partnership of 12 NGOs from 9 European countries, focusing on the use of creative tools to promote awareness around human and social rights among marginalized youth. The initiative was born from a collaboration with the Bureau International Jeunesse (BIJ) under its annual call on access to human rights for all young people and developed in the following years thanks to the support of Erasmus+ programme and the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe
The process began in 2014 with youth exchanges between Belgium and Bosnia, then expanded with new partners and training sessions in Italy, Belgium, and Bosnia. Using non-formal education methods, the activities involved photography, puppetry, graffiti, music, circus, painting, and stop motion animation as ways to explore rights, inclusion, diversity, and equality. Refugees, school children and excluded youth participated directly in these experiences, contributing real-life perspectives on the meaning and challenges of human rights.
The final result is a multimedia publication and online platform collecting all graphic and artistic outputs: illustrations, murals, photos, comics and written reflections. These tools were created by the participants themselves and are meant to serve as an open resource for educators, youth workers, and organizations committed to human rights and social inclusion across Europe.
